We have had the pleasure of running charity classes to raise funds for some very worthwhile foundations. Below are links to their websites with a brief description of each:
The Smile Train
Unlike many charities that do many different things, The Smile Train is focused on solving a single problem: cleft lip and palate.
Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly. Aren't allowed to attend school or hold a job. And face very difficult lives filled with shame and isolation, pain and heartache.
The good news is every single child with a cleft can be helped with surgery that costs as little as $250 and takes as little as 45 minutes.
This is our mission:
- To provide free cleft surgery for millions of poor children in developing countries.
- To provide free cleft-related training for doctors and medical professionals.
Until there are no more children who need help and we have completely eradicated the problem of clefts.
Housing & Services, Inc.
Housing & Services, Inc. (HSI) is celebrating twenty years of housing development and management programs for lower income households and New Yorkers with special needs. We believe that everyone needs a home.
Founded in 1987, HSI's programs include The Kenmore, The Narragansett and The Cecil, all in Manhattan, and Scatter-Site in the Bronx. Each program provides services that are customized to aid men and women with special needs who live with a range of HIV/AIDS, mental illness, physical disabilities and addiction. On-site programs include medical, educational/vocational, and other social services.
HSI is responsible for developing and preserving more than 3,000 units of housing, including groundbreaking work converting Mitchell Lama rental projects into affordable cooperatives. HSI also consults for other non-profits to develop supportive housing programs by assembling financing packages, creating links with government agencies, and crafting viable budgets and timelines.
Animal Haven Shelter
To carefully place cats and dogs in loving homes, as well as give lifetime care for those who cannot be placed.
We fulfill our no-kill mission through adoption programs at our shelter in Queens, our Mobile Adoption Program, and our upcoming Adoption Center and Boutique in SoHo. And Animal Haven Acres Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Center, located in Delaware County, NY is where hard to place dogs and cats can live out their lives in a homelike setting.
